Chapter Eleven

“I’m sorry, Allie. I won’t be able to make it to go running today. I’m feeling a little under the weather.”

I looked at my phone and saw that Lucy had left the message at nearly midnight. I felt a little unsettled. We had gotten into the habit of going running together first thing in the morning and then stopping by the Cup and Bean for a coffee. After Alec had talked to Lucy at dinner, I was worried about her. The rest of the evening had been uncharacteristically quiet for us throughout the evening, and they had left early. I knew in my heart that Lucy couldn’t have killed Bruce. She wasn’t that kind of woman. There were just so many unanswered questions at this point. Who would kill Bruce and then stash him in his ex-wife’s shed? And why?

I dozed off for a while and woke up again at 7:30. The sun was shining, but I wasn’t in the mood to run, so I got up and got dressed and headed down to the Cup and Bean to see if Mr. Winters had found out anything. I also needed a shot of caffeine. In spite of having slept an extra hour and a half, I felt groggy.

The Cup and Bean was warm and cozy and smelled heavenly when I walked through the door. There was a short line at the counter, and after waiting a few minutes, I ordered a caramel latte and then headed over to the corner table where Mr. Winters sat with his newspaper and a cup of black coffee. I slid into the chair across from him and smiled as I took a sip of my coffee.

He looked up at me, his glasses perched on the end of his nose, and nodded. “Good morning, Allie. What brings you out at this hour?”

I shrugged. “It’s after eight o’clock. It’s not that early.”

He nodded. “I guess you’ve got a point there. I was late getting here, but I keep forgetting that, and I feel like it’s earlier than it is. Where’s your sidekick?”

I sighed. Did I tell him everything? I hated to talk about Lucy when she wasn’t present. It felt too much like gossip, and the last thing I wanted to do was gossip about her.

I decided to tell him as little as possible. “She wasn’t feeling up to running this morning. So, what have you found out?”

He leaned forward. “Don’t you think it’s odd that the dead man was found in Lucy’s storage shed? And that they were married once?”

I sighed and nodded. This detail was getting around now. “Yes, I think it’s very strange. But obviously, someone is trying to set her up. You know as well as I do that Lucy would never do anything to hurt anyone.” I said it as forcefully as I could. I had no doubts about my best friend.

He gazed at me and then nodded. “If you say so.”

I gasped. “Mr. Winters! Of course, I say so. Don’t say it like that.
